1. Sam Sheppard and Bernard Finch were prominent surgeons who had been convicted, after highly publicized trials, of first-degree murder in the deaths of their wives—Marilyn Sheppard, in Cleveland, in 1954, and Barbara Finch, in Los Angeles, in 1960. Also convicted in the Finch case was the doctor’s mistress, Carole Tregoff. Bill Randall said he studied both cases while preparing for the Thompson trial.
